Microsoft loves to keep us on our toes with its ever-changing system requirements.

Microsoft loves to keep us on our toes with its ever-changing system requirements. And they’ve done it again, this time with Windows 11.

Back in June they updated the list of supported processors from AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm. Now they’ve given us another surprise update. This time, 44 types of Intel processors are no longer supported.

But don’t panic. Microsoft assures us these changes should have ‘little to no impact’ on the average Windows 11 user. Plus, the dropped processors are from the company’s server range.

But this change is still significant. Why? Because it’s a reminder that keeping your business’s tech up-to-date is crucial. Today’s cutting-edge processor will eventually be tomorrow’s unsupported hardware.

If you want my team to check your hardware, that’s no problem – just get in touch.

Can we talk about ransomware attacks for a minute?

Can we talk about ransomware attacks for a minute? This is where your business’s data is held hostage until you pay a ransom fee (hence the name).

According to a new report, the number of reported ransomware attacks has doubled since last year. But it gets worse.

The culprit behind this alarming surge? None other than artificial intelligence (AI). That’s right, the same technology that’s revolutionising everything from healthcare to self-driving cars is also turbocharging ransomware attacks. And it’s not just any old AI – it’s generative AI, which reduces the skill needed to launch an attack.

Imagine a phishing email so well-written that even the most switched on member of your staff might mistake it for a legitimate message. Gone are the tell-tale signs of poor grammar and spelling that once tipped us off to these scams. These attacks are more convincing than ever before.

The sectors hit hardest by this rise in attacks are healthcare, education, and infrastructure. In fact, attacks in these areas have more than quadrupled since 2021. Why? Because they’re often resource-constrained and an attack can have immediate and severe impacts, increasing the likelihood that the ransom will be paid.

But you must remember any business can fall victim to a ransomware attack or any other type of cyber crime.

It means that as our world becomes increasingly digitised, the threats we face are evolving at an alarming pace. We must all remain vigilant, keep our security measures up-to-date, and never underestimate the power of AI – for better or for worse.

How does this make you feel about your business’s cyber security?

Have you noticed that extra chatty Bing AI button that’s recently popped up on your Microsoft Edge browser?

Have you noticed that extra chatty Bing AI button that’s recently popped up on your Microsoft Edge browser?

You know, the one that seems to have a mind of its own and insists on making its presence known every time you open a new tab or conduct a search?

Well, you’re not alone. It’s like that one friend who can’t seem to take a hint when you’re trying to focus.

But fear not, just like that friend, Bing can be silenced. (Don’t worry, it won’t hold grudges.) If you’d rather not have Bing breathing down your neck every time you’re trying to get some work done, here’s how to remove it:

Launch Microsoft Edge.

Look for the three-dotted menu icon on the top right corner (it’s like a game of ‘Where’s Wally,’ but easier).

Click on it and select ‘Settings’ from the pop-up menu.

Now, navigate to the ‘Sidebar.’

Click on the ‘Discover’ button under ‘App specific settings’.

Here’s where the magic happens: Toggle off the ‘Show Discover’ option. Voila! Bing Chat is now a thing of the past.

And hey, if you ever start to miss Bing’s company (I know, unlikely), you can always toggle the ‘Show Discover’ option back on.

Remember, if you can’t find the option to disable Bing, it might be time for an update. Give your Microsoft Edge the latest version glow-up it deserves – if you need a hand with that, get in touch.

Have you ever wondered why your 4pm meetings seem to be falling flat?

Have you ever wondered why your 4pm meetings seem to be falling flat? Why the energy is low, the ideas are sparse, and your hybrid workers are often absent? Well, it’s time to face a hard truth – 4pm might just be the worst time to schedule a meeting.

Yes, I know, it’s a shocking revelation.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the new era of hybrid work has made the once-cherished 4pm to 6pm meeting slot a logistical nightmare.

Why?

These hours coincide with school runs, gym sessions, and generally, the transition from work life to personal life. Your dedicated employees aren’t shirking responsibilities, they’re simply trying to find a balance between their work lives and their personal lives. Can we blame them?

But here’s the real kicker. Even if every team member was present and accounted for, research shows that productivity levels at 4pm are significantly lower than in the morning hours. That’s right, those final hours of the work day, when brains are fried and energy is low, may not be the ideal time for decision-making and brainstorming after all.

But how can we get things done if everyone isn’t present at the same time? The answer may surprise you.

Here’s a thought: do all discussions really need to be meetings?

Think about it. How many meetings have you attended that could easily have been an email or a Teams conversation? Research suggests that over 40% of meetings could be eliminated without any major consequences. That’s almost half of your meetings that could be time better spent on actual work.

So, here’s a call to action: Let’s rethink the way we do meetings. Let’s consider the needs of our hybrid workers, the natural energy rhythms of our teams, and the efficiency of our communication methods.

After all, as the saying goes, ‘Time is money.’ And who wants to waste money on unproductive meetings? Not me! If the meeting could have been an email, make it an email!

It’s hard to imagine a world without Mario, Luigi, and the gang

It’s hard to imagine a world without Mario, Luigi, and the gang now, but it was a delicate marketing operation to convince Western audiences that coin-operated games were worth owning at home…

The year is 1983. Nintendo, a fledgling video game company, has just released their first system, the Famicom, in Japan. Now, they have their sights set on America.

But there’s a problem.

Western audiences are used to playing video games in arcades, not in their living rooms. How do you convince them to make the switch?

Nintendo’s answer was as bold as it was risky. They decided to licence out their biggest characters to third-party companies, giving them free rein to utilise these characters as they saw fit. Can you imagine that today?

But back in ’83, Mario wasn’t the household name we know today. He was just a pixelated Italian plumber with a knack for smashing barrels and rescuing damsels in distress. And so, he ended up in places you’d least expect. One such place was a vinyl record called ‘Donkey Kong Goes Home.’

Yes, you heard it right. Before Spotify, before MP3s, heck, even before CDs were a thing, our beloved Mario made his vocal debut in a children’s music album.

The album, released under the now-defunct Kid Stuff Records label, was a 20-minute musical odyssey that adapted the original Donkey Kong game into a narrative. It gave us a backstory for the eponymous ape, turned damsel-in-distress Pauline into a pizza delivery girl (talk about a career change), and featured a fully voiced Mario – a whole decade before Charles Martinet would bring our favourite plumber to life.

Now, ‘Donkey Kong Goes Home’ is a bit like the dinosaur fossils in your local museum – preserved in time, but largely forgotten by the masses. With almost no digital footprint and no preservation efforts from Nintendo, it exists today as a hidden gem in the vast annals of gaming history.

So, what’s the takeaway here for us business owners? It’s simple: don’t be afraid to take risks. Sometimes, you have to let others play with your ideas to find out what might work best.

Remember, folks, before they were saving Princess Peach, Mario and Luigi were just two plumbers trying to make it big in America. And look where they are now! So here’s to taking big leaps, embracing the unknown, and always striving for that next level – in business and in life.

This week back in 1991, the world witnessed a monumental moment – the first email sent from space.

This week back in 1991, the world witnessed a monumental moment – the first email sent from space.

While some of us were still wrestling with dial-up connections and waiting for our AOL mail to load, astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis were casually sending emails from outer space. Talk about taking remote work to a whole new level.

Mission STS-43 astronauts Shannon Lucid and James C. Adamson, armed with an Apple Macintosh Portable computer (and we thought working from our laptops was cool), sent the first ever email from space.

The message read:

‘Hello Earth! Greetings from the STS-43 Crew. This is the first AppleLink from space. Having a GREAT time, wish you were here,…send cryo and RCS! Hasta la vista, baby,…we’ll be back!’

I mean, if I was floating around in zero gravity, I’d probably also sign off my emails with ‘Hasta la vista, baby’!

This remarkable feat was achieved using the AppleLink online service. The software on the Macintosh was specially configured to connect to NASA’s communication system, allowing the Shuttle to interface with Apple’s proprietary network from space. The Macintosh Portable itself only had minor modifications to operate in space. And here we are in 2023, getting frustrated when our Wi-Fi drops out for a second.

As business owners, we can take inspiration from this historic event. If an email can be sent from space with early ’90s technology, surely we can overcome whatever challenges our businesses face today, right?

Whether it’s innovating our products, improving our services, or simply figuring out how to stop Gary in accounting from replying-all to every company-wide email!

A new Google Docs phishing scam that’s bypassing usual detection measures

Cyber security software company, Check Point, has uncovered a new Google Docs phishing scam that’s bypassing usual detection measures to land straight into victims’ inboxes.

You might think this wouldn’t happen to you, but it’s more likely than you think. Dubbed as an evolution of BEC (business email compromise) 3.0, this scam uses legitimate sites to gain access to your mailbox.

Here’s how it works: cyber criminals create a Google Doc, where they can hide any sort of attack they want, including phishing links and URLs that redirect to malware.

Then, they share the Doc with the victim using the typical Google Drive sharing process. And because the email arrives from a genuine Google email address, not some shady domain, victims are less likely to suspect foul play. It’s like getting a letter from your dear Aunt Mildred, only to find out it was penned by a con artist.

And here’s the kicker: detection and prevention tools are also more likely to trust emails from genuine services like Google.

But don’t start abandoning Google Docs just yet. Google, being the internet’s superhero, already has strong protections in place against these types of tactics. They’ve got built-in warnings in Docs, automatic scans in Drive, and probably a few other tricks up their sleeves.

In the meantime, you could channel your inner James Bond and implement advanced measures that use artificial intelligence to spot multiple phishing indicators. File scanning software and URL protection are also recommended. It’s time to upgrade your spy gadgets… and if my team can help, get in touch!

Stay vigilant, keep your cyber security glasses on, and don’t trust a Google Doc without giving it a good once-over.

You’ve heard the saying, ‘There’s no such thing as a free lunch.”

You’ve heard the saying, ‘There’s no such thing as a free lunch.” Well, that applies to VPNs too. Whilst the allure of a free Virtual Private Network (VPN) might seem irresistible, it’s time to unveil the hidden costs behind these so-called ‘freebies’.

You might be thinking, ‘Wait, what? My free VPN could be costing me?’ Indeed, it could! And we’re not just talking pennies here. We’re talking potentially significant business risks that could cost you big time.

Running a VPN service is no small feat. It involves servers, infrastructure, maintenance, staff – none of these are cheap. So, how on earth do free VPN providers keep their operations running without charging users a penny? The answer might leave you gobsmacked.

While you sit browsing the internet through your free VPN, confident in the privacy it supposedly provides, behind the scenes your sensitive data might actually be collected, packaged, and sold to the highest bidder.

Cyber criminals, advertisers, even government agencies could potentially get their hands on your personal or business information.

And it doesn’t stop there. Free VPNs are infamous for injecting unwanted ads and tracking cookies into your browsing sessions. Ever wondered why you’re suddenly swamped with eerily accurate ads? Your friendly ‘free’ VPN service is probably cashing in on your browsing habits.

Now, let’s add a dash of corporate horror to this already unsettling scenario. Imagine an employee downloading a free VPN on a company device, or on their personal device that they use for work. Company data could be exposed, representing a serious business risk.

But don’t worry, the solution is simple and straightforward – educate your employees about the risks associated with free VPNs and encourage the use of reliable, paid VPN services. These guarantee no logging of data, robust encryption, and superior user privacy.

In fact, it might be worth providing a secure VPN for them. After all, when it comes to online security, free often comes at a higher cost. Isn’t it worth investing a few pounds a month to protect your company’s valuable information?

Remember, in the world of VPNs, if you’re not paying for it, chances are, you’re the product.

Do you trust everything you read online?

Do you trust everything you read online? How about the content generated by chatbots? If your answer is a resounding ‘Yes,’ then let me introduce you to an unexpected voice of caution: Google’s Vice President, Debbie Weinstein.

In a recent interview with BBC, she advised people to fact-check content generated by Google’s Bard AI using Google Search. A bit ironic, isn’t it? A VP at Google, suggesting that we need to double-check Google’s own AI product.

Weinstein considers Bard more of an “experiment” for “collaboration around problem solving” and “creating new ideas”. However, she was clear that Bard wasn’t intended as a resource for “specific information”. Bard’s homepage states ‘it has limitations and won’t always get it right,’ but doesn’t repeat Ms. Weinstein’s advice to double-check results via Google Search.

So, does this mean that we should start treating our friendly neighbourhood AI chatbot with suspicion? Well, yes and no.

Generative AI does have a track record of hallucinating, which means they sometimes generate completely false information. A couple of New York lawyers learnt this the hard way when they used ChatGPT in a case, presenting what turned out to be “fictitious legal research”. Ouch!

However, it’s a little disconcerting when a company’s VP essentially says, ‘Don’t trust our AI too much.’ Especially when the same AI is being marketed as a ‘launchpad for curiosity’; a conversational, context-providing tool for looking up stuff.

And here’s where it gets even more curious. Google recently showcased how Bard could enhance Google Search, from providing in-depth results on a topic to even creating a fitness plan. Now, wouldn’t these features require factual information? So, is Ms. Weinstein implying that this update is all for naught because it uses Google’s AI tech?

The contradictions are puzzling, to say the least. If we’re not supposed to use the chatbot for important information, then why is it being added to the search engine to further enhance it? Why implement something that’s apparently untrustworthy?

In the end, it boils down to this: Trust, but verify. Whether it’s AI-generated content or human-written, a healthy dose of skepticism can go a long way.

Google has been seriously beefing up its chatbot, Bard’s capabilities

Google has been seriously beefing up its chatbot, Bard’s capabilities, integrating it into other Google products and services and making it a heavyweight contender in the artificial intelligence arena.

The latest update? Google Lens has joined the party.

You can now upload images to give Bard additional context. It’s a bit like giving Bard a pair of glasses to see the world more clearly.

So what can you do with this supercharged version of Bard?

Well, for starters, you can identify objects and scenes, get image descriptions, and even search the web for pictures of what you’re looking for.

For instance, ask Bard for a photo of a sleeping puppy, and it’ll pull up an accurate (and adorable) result, complete with extra info on how many hours a day a young dog sleeps.

Or show Bard a photo from your gallery, and it’ll describe the scene and drop some knowledge bombs about beaches or whatever else is in the picture.

To get the most out of Bard, remember that context is king. The more information you provide, the better the results. And if Bard doesn’t quite hit the mark the first time, you can refine its responses with additional prompts.

Ready to test drive Bard’s new features? Just click the little icon on the left side of the text box where you usually type your prompt, and add any photo you want to your conversation.

And there’s more. With the latest updates, you can pin conversation threads and get Bard to read responses out loud in more than 40 languages.

For the full scoop on all the new additions, check out the Bard update page.

As business owners we often have to make the most of every minute, and that includes our commute.

But did you know that you can now take your Teams calls on the road with you, thanks to Apple CarPlay?

That’s right, Teams isn’t just for video calls or straightforward phone calls from your desk anymore. Now, you can maximise your time by making Teams phone calls from your car.

I’m not suggesting you juggle your steering wheel and your smartphone. I’m all about safety.

So how does it work?

All you need is a vehicle that supports CarPlay, an iPhone, and the Teams app for iOS (version released 31 Aug 2021 or later). Simply connect your iPhone to your vehicle using Bluetooth or a USB cable, and your device’s screen appears on your car’s display.

And the best part? You can use Siri voice commands to make calls to one or more people in Teams. Just select the Teams icon to prompt Siri.

For example, you could say: ‘Call Colleague 1 and Colleague 2 using Teams’, or ‘Use Teams to look up my most recent call.’

It’s like having your own personal assistant in the car with you.

So, next time you’re stuck in traffic or heading out on a road trip, remember: with Teams and Apple CarPlay, you can stay connected safely and efficiently.

Now, if only they could invent something to make the traffic disappear…

Job interviews can be nerve-wracking…

Job interviews can be nerve-wracking…

You’ve got your suit pressed, your CV polished, and you’ve rehearsed answers to every possible question… or so you thought.

Just when you think you’re prepared for anything, the interviewer throws you a curveball: ‘Why are manhole covers round?’

Wait, what? Is this a job interview or a pub quiz?

Believe it or not, this isn’t a joke.

This quirky question is reportedly one of Microsoft’s favourite ways to test prospective employees’ ability to think outside the box. And you thought they’d just ask about Excel skills!

So why ARE manhole covers round?

The practical answer is that a round cover can’t fall through a round hole because it’s the same width all around. It also doesn’t need to be rotated or precisely aligned when placing it back on.

But Microsoft isn’t really interested in a candidate’s knowledge of urban infrastructure. They want to see how they approach a problem that seems unrelated to the job. Can they think creatively? How do they handle unexpected challenges?

So next time you’re prepping for a job interview, remember: it’s not just about the candidate having the right answers. It’s about them showing their thought process, creativity, and their ability to handle the unexpected.

Now, here’s a challenge for you: If you were conducting a job interview, what weird or unusual question would you ask? Drop your answers in the comments. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Can you believe it’s been 30 years since Apple introduced one of the world’s first Personal Digital Assistants (PDA)?

Can you believe it’s been 30 years since Apple introduced one of the world’s first Personal Digital Assistants (PDA)?

That’s right, before Siri and Alexa, there was the Newton MessagePad.

Talk about a blast from the past!

Launched on the 3rd of August 1993, this little gadget may not have been a commercial hit, but it certainly left its mark on the tech world. The term ‘PDA’ was actually coined by Apple’s then-CEO John Sculley in 1992. Bet you didn’t know that.

While the Newton MessagePad might be remembered as the device that wasn’t quite ‘the next big thing’, it set the bar for future PDA designs and paved the way for the smartphones we can’t live without today. So let’s give credit where credit is due.

Perhaps the most significant contribution the Newton made to the tech industry was the development of the ARM processor architecture. Apple poured heavy investments into this fledgling technology to power the Newton devices.

Fast forward to today, and the ARM architecture forms the foundation of most of the world’s mobile devices, including all versions of the Apple iPhone and iPad. Talk about a game changer!

Fun fact: In 1998, Apple sold their ownership interest in ARM, raking in a cool $800 million (£621+ million). This much-needed cash injection helped Apple navigate through some tough times. So in a way, we have the Newton to thank for the Apple we know and love today.

So here’s to the Newton MessagePad – the underdog that quietly revolutionised the tech world. You may not have made it into every pocket or handbag, but you sure did make a difference. Happy anniversary!

If you’ve been putting off updating your Google Chrome browser, now is the time to hit that update button.

If you’ve been putting off updating your Google Chrome browser, now is the time to hit that update button.

Why?

Let’s just say that Google has been busy swatting bugs and patching holes – 20 of them to be precise.

Google’s latest Chrome update includes a whopping 20 security fixes across Windows, Mac, and Linux versions.

Eleven of these pesky issues are confirmed vulnerabilities and have been allocated fancy names like Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) numbers.

Sounds scary, but don’t worry, Google has got this under control.

Four of these vulnerabilities have a high CVE rating, and the good folks who reported them to Google have been awarded a total of $16,000 (£12,424) in bounties. Not too shabby for a day’s work, eh?

But here’s the thing – Google hasn’t released detailed technical info about these vulnerabilities yet. Why? Because they want to make sure as many people as possible can update Chrome before the details are made public.

Clever.

Now, I know you’re busy running a business.

The good news is that most Chromium-powered browsers automatically download security updates. But there’s a catch – you need to restart the application for the update to be activated.

I know, I know, who has time to restart? But trust me, it’s worth the effort.

So, what are you waiting for? Head over to the Help|About option in Google Chrome, and let the magic happen. Once the update is downloaded, hit that restart button and you’re all set.

Remember, the early bird catches the worm, or in this case, avoids the bug. So go ahead, update your browser now. And if you need help, get in touch.

Big news for all you spreadsheet super fans out there…

Big news for all you spreadsheet super fans out there…

Excel has just rolled out a new feature that’s going to change the game… you can now use pictures as cell values in Excel.

Now, your spreadsheets can be a visual delight.

And the best part?

These pictures stick around even when you modify the sheet’s layout. Talk about loyal.

Remember the IMAGE function that let us place web pictures in cells using URLs? Excel has taken it up a notch. You can now insert local pictures directly into cells from your device or stock image libraries.

This means you can insert things like product images or even team photos into your cells.

Here’s how you can jazz up your data:

Select the cell where you want the picture to live.
Go to Insert > Pictures > Place in Cell, and choose your source: This Device, Stock Images, or Online Pictures.

Voila! You’ve just made your spreadsheet a whole lot prettier.

And if you’re feeling indecisive (we’ve all been there), you can switch between picture types. Just select an existing picture inserted using the “Place over Cells” command, and click the “Place in Cell” button next to the image.

For those who like to keep things snappy, you can paste a picture from the clipboard directly into a cell. Just use the Paste > Paste Picture in Cell option on the Home tab or in the right-click context menu. But remember, the default Paste command will paste the picture over cells, not into a cell. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Currently, this shiny new feature is available to Insiders running Windows (Version 2306) and Mac (Version 16.75). But don’t worry, Excel plans to roll out these capabilities on the web, iOS, and Android soon. Stay tuned.

Can you really work from the beach? It’s probably crossed your mind at least once…

Can you really work from the beach?

It’s probably crossed your mind at least once…

The idea of swapping your office chair for a sunlounger and trading the humdrum of office life for the soothing sound of waves is undeniably appealing.

But is it truly feasible?

You’re on a sun-kissed beach, laptop in hand, ready to conquer the world (or at least your inbox). But wait, is that a flock of seagulls eyeing your sandwich? Is your screen turning into a mirror under the bright sun? And why is your Wi-Fi signal playing hide-and-seek?

Working from the beach might not be as productive as you’d hope. Here’s why:

Distractions: Beaches are bustling with activity – kids building sandcastles, volleyball games, people splashing around in the water. It’s like trying to work in the middle of a carnival.

Glare: The sun, while great for tanning, isn’t exactly laptop-friendly. The glare can make it almost impossible to see your screen.

Connectivity: Good luck finding stable Wi-Fi or even decent data coverage on a remote beach.

Sand: Need we say more? Sand has a knack for getting everywhere, including your precious laptop.

But if you’re still determined to make the beach your office, here are some tips to keep in mind:

Beat the glare: Invest in a laptop sun shade or a glare-proof screen protector.

Power up: Bring a portable charger or a solar-powered one if you’re feeling extra eco-friendly.

Stay connected: Consider a personal Wi-Fi hotspot for reliable internet access.

Protect your gear: A waterproof and sand-proof laptop case is a must.

So, can you really work from the beach? With some preparation and the right gear, it’s possible. But remember, even if your beach office experiment doesn’t go as planned, at least you’ll have a great view, a tan, and maybe even a funny story to share at your next virtual meeting.

How are mushrooms changing the world of tech?

How are mushrooms changing the world of tech?

Scientists at the Unconventional Computing Laboratory at the University of the West of England have been experimenting with mushrooms and their potential applications in computer architecture. They’ve actually managed to develop a ‘living PC’ using mushrooms.

Now, before you start imagining your office filled with mushroom-shaped computers, let’s clarify what this means exactly.

The researchers are harnessing the unique properties of fungi to create biodegradable alternatives to some plastics used in batteries and computer chips. The idea is to build a sustainable future where tech doesn’t contribute to the growing problem of e-waste.

But let’s pause for a moment… Mushrooms? Computers? Does this ring a bell with any of you gamers out there?

If you’re a fan of the TV series, ‘The Last of Us’, you might be feeling a little uneasy right now. For those who haven’t seen it, let’s just say that the show presents a post-apocalyptic world where a certain type of fungus (cordyceps) has some rather unpleasant effects on humanity.

But don’t worry, we’re not about to witness a real-life version of ‘The Last of Us’. The scientists are using cordyceps in their experiments, but they are far from creating mushroom-zombies. Their work is focused on exploring the feasibility of using fungi in computing, and so far, the results are promising.

So, how does this impact you? Well, imagine a world where your tech hardware is not only functional but also sustainable. Imagine contributing to a cleaner planet every time you upgrade your office computers. Sounds like a win-win situation, doesn’t it?

As we move towards a greener future, innovations like these could play a crucial role. So, next time you look at a mushroom, remember, it’s not just a tasty ingredient, it could also be the future of computing,

When you think of famous Lisas, who comes to mind?

When you think of famous Lisas, who comes to mind? Lisa Simpson with her saxophone and wisdom beyond her years? Or perhaps the enigmatic Mona Lisa, forever capturing our curiosity with her cryptic smile?

This week we’re celebrating a lesser-known Lisa, one that has quietly revolutionised our world.

On the 30th of July, back in 1979, Apple began work on a project named Lisa. No, she wasn’t a cartoon character or a mysterious lady in a painting, but rather the world’s first commercial computer with a graphical user interface. Let’s give a round of applause for Lisa, the unsung hero of modern computing!

Sure, Lisa might have had a bit of a rocky start — originally intended to sell for $2,000 (£1528) in 1981, she was delayed until 1983 and ended up costing a whopping $10,000 (£7640).

Despite her high cost and a few hardware hiccups, Lisa was a pioneer, introducing technology that was light-years ahead of its time.

Although Lisa couldn’t quite find her footing in the commercial market, her influence didn’t stop there. The technology she introduced went on to shape the development of the Macintosh and other future computer and operating system designs.

So here’s to Lisa, the computer that dared to dream big and paved the way for the technology we rely on today. In the grand tapestry of ‘Lisa’ history, she may not be as well-known as her namesakes, but in the tech world, she’s a superstar. Happy anniversary, Lisa!

Have you tried Google Bard yet?

Have you tried Google Bard yet? It’s the new chatbot on the block that you might like to check out.

Google’s chatbot is breaking barriers with its new text-to-speech feature. Gone are the days of silent interaction. Bard can now speak back to you, answering your questions out loud. Picture yourself multitasking, hands-free, while Bard narrates your requested information. How convenient is that?

This innovation goes beyond mere novelty. According to numerous sources, this update significantly enhances accessibility for people worldwide. For those who find reading challenging or merely prefer auditory learning, this feature is a godsend.

But what does this mean for competitors like ChatGPT and Bing? Only time will tell, but I can imagine they’ll probably follow suit.

If you’ve tried this text-to-speech feature already, I’d love to hear what you think?

Are you tired of juggling between Zoom meetings and Google Calendar?

Are you tired of juggling between Zoom meetings and Google Calendar? Well, today is your lucky day!

You see, Google Calendar makes adding a video conference to an invitation incredibly easy. But, there’s a catch! The video chat service of choice has to be Google Meet.

I know, right? Google is very protective of its own products. Have you ever found yourself jumping on the Google Meet link that was in the calender, only everyone else has jumped on a Zoom link? So confusing.

But there’s a way around this problem: The Zoom for Google Workspace extension.

First, install the extension. Google will ask for a few permissions.

Next, create an event in Google Calendar. Just double-click on a date, title your meeting, set the start and end times, and you’re halfway there.

Now, notice that blue button saying ‘Add Google Meet video conferencing’? Don’t let it fool you. Click on the arrow next to it and select Zoom.

Boom! You’ve just added a Zoom link to your Google Calendar event.

If you’re not logged in to Zoom, you’ll need to do so. Then Google will ask if you’d like to add conferencing via Zoom to Google Workspace. Check the box and click ‘Allow’.

You can now invite guests to your meeting from your contacts list or by typing in their email addresses. Just remember, Google might give you a little warning if you invite someone who doesn’t use Google Calendar.

Finally, hit ‘Save’ and send out those invitations. You’ve just successfully scheduled a Zoom meeting through Google Calendar.

And that’s it! With these simple steps, you can make Zoom and Google Calendar best friends. No more switching between apps, no more confusion. Just seamless scheduling for your online meetings. Isn’t that a time-saver?

Is your workstation a place of comfort or discomfort?

Is your workstation a place of comfort or discomfort? A haven for productivity or a breeding ground for aches and pains?

And what about your employees’ workstations?

We often brush off the importance of a well-set workstation. But a little discomfort is not part of the job – it can cause long-term issues with employee absence and your expensive equipment being used incorrectly.

If your workstation tech isn’t set up correctly and ergonomically, it can feel like a real-life horror show.

Office ergonomics aren’t just fancy words thrown around by health enthusiasts. It’s an essential aspect of your work life that can save you from dreaded neck and back pain, sore wrists and shoulders. Yes, those pesky problems that sneak up on you after hours of seated work can be avoided!

Take your chair. Did you know that the right chair can support your spine? Adjust the height so your feet rest flat on the floor, or use a footrest. No more dangling feet or hunching over. And those armrests? They’re not just for show. Position them just right, and your arms, elbows, and shoulders will thank you.

What about your keyboard and mouse? Place them in front of you so your wrists and forearms are in line and your shoulders are relaxed. Keep your wrists straight, your upper arms close to your body, and your hands at or slightly below the level of your elbows. Sounds like a yoga pose, doesn’t it? But trust me, your body will thank you.

Your monitor should be an arm’s length away from your face to prevent eye strain. And if you wear bifocals, lower the monitor an additional 1 to 2 inches for more comfortable viewing.

For laptop-lovers, consider getting an external keyboard and mouse, along with a laptop stand. Your neck will appreciate the gesture!

Remember, with the right tech setup, your workstation can be a haven for comfort and productivity.

Are you aware of the significance emojis hold in our digital era?

Are you aware of the significance emojis hold in our digital era?

In just a few short years, these expressive symbols have transformed from simple smiley faces into a global language that transcends borders and cultures. And there’s a day dedicated to these small but mighty communicative tools – World Emoji Day, which was earlier this week.

World Emoji Day falls on the 17th of July every year and this year was the tenth annual global emoji celebration.

Why the 17th of July, you might wonder? The answer lies in the calendar emoji itself which displays this date! That’s the branding on Apple’s iCal (now called Calendar) which launched on that date, 21 years ago.

The joy that emojis bring is immeasurable. They’ve become an essential part of our online conversations, adding colour, emotion, and personality to our digital interactions.

Beyond the fun and creativity, World Emoji Day serves as a reminder of the power of emojis in modern communication. It’s a testament to how these tiny symbols have revolutionised the way we express ourselves, making our digital interactions more human and relatable.

What’s your most-used emoji and what do you think it says about you?

Microsoft has declared war against annoying website notification pop-ups with its latest tool.

Microsoft has declared war against annoying website notification pop-ups with its latest tool. You know the ones I’m talking about – those sneaky little messages that trick you into clicking ‘allow’ by pretending to check if you’re a robot. And once you do, you get a barrage of annoying notifications from the website every time somebody sneezes (or that’s what it feels like).

These underhanded tactics can also lead to a barrage of misleading notifications, like false virus alerts and deceptive antivirus software sales. Isn’t that just the worst? Now Microsoft’s Edge has a new tool that will protect us from these spam notifications.

Microsoft has said, and I quote: ‘Website notifications are great for staying up to date on your favourite web apps, but they can also be used to spam you with messages that can be unwanted or even misleading.’

Edge is kicking these spammy notifications to the curb. Microsoft has identified dozens of different types of spam notifications and has taken away the privileges from the websites that send them.

A round of applause, please!

This may not seem like a big deal to the tech-savvy among us, but let’s not forget not everyone is so clued-up on the digital world. These notifications can be downright intimidating… not to mention annoying for everyone.

Microsoft has combined this initiative with another plan to combat those misleading notifications. They’ve found that most of these nuisances come from unfamiliar websites. So, they’ve decided to deliver the first notification from these sites in a ‘quiet’ fashion. No more full-on pop-ups, just a subtle message in the address bar.

And guess what? It’s working! There’s been a ‘significant decrease in customers reporting issues with notifications.’

Do these kinds of notifications drive you mad? And if you use Edge, have you noticed an improvement?

Have you ever stopped to question what happens to your digital footprint?

Have you ever stopped to question what happens to your digital footprint? Or what could happen to the information you share so freely online?

Let me draw your attention to a recent development. Google, which touches nearly every aspect of our digital lives, has made a significant change to its privacy policy.

Imagine this: Everything you post, every public comment you leave, every piece of publicly available data associated with you could now be used by Google to train its AI systems.

This is not speculation, it’s a reality. A reality baked into Google’s updated privacy policy as of the 1st of July, 2023.

Now, you might ask, ‘What does this mean for me?’ Well, every bit of public information about you can be used to improve Google’s AI products. This isn’t just about creating more effective algorithms or enhancing machine learning. It’s about using real-life data – your data – to teach machines how to think, act and react.

But why should you care? Let me put it in perspective. The implications of this policy change are far-reaching. It’s not just about the data you willingly put out there, but also about how this data can be used, manipulated, and potentially exploited by artificial intelligence.

This isn’t a shift to be taken lightly. It’s a reality that demands our attention, our awareness, and our understanding.

So, what can you do?

Start by being aware of the information you make publicly available – and make sure your employees do the same. That includes the information you share with chatbots, especially if it’s sensitive business information. And always check and question the privacy policies of the platforms you use.

Does this new policy update concern you? What will you be doing differently online?

Most of us know about phishing emails… those poorly written messages that promise you a million pounds if you just click the link?

Most of us know about phishing emails… those poorly written messages that promise you a million pounds if you just click the link?

Or that tell you your account has been compromised, so you need to reconfirm your details. Yeah, those. But our cyber adversaries are evolving. They’re skipping the writing class and going straight to art school!

According to cybersecurity firm Check Point, cyber criminals are now using large, promotional images instead of text in their phishing attempts.

Imagine getting an email that looks like it’s from Amazon or John Lewis with a big image of an offer. But when you click on it, instead of being whisked away to a world of retail therapy, you’re sent to a fake website that looks like the store but isn’t. It’s designed to steal your passwords and other sensitive info. Talk about a buzzkill.

And these hackers are smart. They’re impersonating big brands, offering gift cards and loyalty programs as bait.

The worst part? These image-based attacks can even bypass safety measures used by Gmail, Outlook, and other email services. So, your trusty spam filter might not save you this time.

But don’t panic! There are ways to protect yourself:

Check the sender’s address: If it looks fishy (pun intended), it probably is.

Don’t click on links or download attachments from suspicious emails: If you must, hover your mouse over the link to see where it leads.

Keep calm and carry on: Cyber criminals often try to create a sense of urgency to make you act without thinking. Don’t fall for it!

So, keep your eyes peeled for these picture-perfect phishing attempts, and if you want any further advice from me and my team, get in touch.

Guess who – or what – turned 21 today? Apple’s iCal!

Guess who – or what – turned 21 today? Apple’s iCal!

It seems like just yesterday when we were marvelling at this innovative piece of software, allowing us to manage multiple calendars and sync them to our Bluetooth-enabled devices. Remember PalmOS devices and the early iPods? Ah, the good old days!

The name might confuse you. iCal is now simply known as ‘Calendar’, but when it was released it was a game-changer. It not only became a staple for Mac fans but also found its way into our pockets with the release of the iPhone in 2007.

And here’s a fun fact – Apple chose to display iCal’s launch date (the 17th of July) on their calendar emoji. Now that’s some clever branding!

So, here we are, 21 years later, and Calendar is all grown up. It’s seen us through countless meetings, birthdays, anniversaries, and even the odd reminder to water the plants. It’s been there, quietly keeping our lives organised while we hustle and make things happen.

As we celebrate this milestone, let’s raise a virtual glass to Calendar – the unsung hero of our daily grind. Here’s to 21 years of keeping us on track, and many more to come!

Happy 21st Birthday, Calendar – you’re officially all grown up!

Do you use Google Calendar? Ever found yourself planning an event or meeting and wishing you could just hit a magic button to invite everyone all at once?

Do you use Google Calendar? Ever found yourself planning an event or meeting and wishing you could just hit a magic button to invite everyone all at once?

Wish no more. Google’s adding a digital party planner, or the equivalent at least.

Once you’ve created your event, you’ll spot a shiny new ‘Share’ button nestled comfortably under the name and date. Tap it, and like magic, you can select which apps to share your event with – think Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord, and more.

Imagine the time saved! The headaches avoided! The convenience! The guests you invite will have the option to RSVP with a simple Yes, No, or Maybe, and the event link will be forwarded to their email IDs. Now, if only Google Calendar could also convince them to bring snacks…

Whilst I don’t have an exact release date for this upcoming feature, judging by a video preview, it seems ready to roll out any day now.

This isn’t the first time Google Calendar has wowed me this year. Remember the surprise move when Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook decided to play nice and improve their interoperability. That’s right, even sworn tech rivals can find common ground when it comes to making our lives a little easier.

So, whether you’re planning a virtual meeting, a birthday party, or a super-secret surprise event (promise I won’t tell!), keep an eye out for this handy new feature.

Get ready… as Microsoft is about to turn your audio world upside down.

A downside to Microsoft Teams meetings is wanting to experience the conversation as if you were all in the same room. Get ready… as Microsoft is about to turn your audio world upside down.

It’s introducing Spatial Audio, the next-generation immersive soundscape for Teams meetings. With either a wired stereo headset or built-in stereo speakers, this new feature could breathe new life into your virtual meetings.

Imagine this: each voice in your meeting is spatialised across the visual stage in Gallery view. That means it comes from a specific location, just the same as if you were having a meeting with someone sat to your left, and someone else to your right.

It’s like each attendee has their own spot on the stage, making conversations feel more natural and easier to follow, especially when multiple people are speaking at once.

Turning on Spatial Audio is easy.

1. Before the meeting: Choose a wired stereo headset or built-in stereo speakers on the pre-join screen. You’ll find the Spatial audio toggle under Device Settings -> Speaker.

2. During the meeting: Click More > Settings > Device settings, then select your audio device and flip on the Spatial audio toggle.

3. Anytime: Go to Settings and more > Settings > Devices and switch on Spatial audio.

Next time you’re in a Teams meeting, try Spatial Audio. It’s like having your own personal sound engineer ensuring you don’t miss a beat (or a word).

And the next innovation? Can Teams make a round of coffee?

It turns out that your modern USB-C charger might just have more processing power than the guidance computer that took Neil Armstrong and his crew to the lunar surface in 1969.

Ever looked at your phone charger and thought, ‘Hey, I bet this little guy could fly me to the moon?’ No? Well, buckle up because you and I are about to embark on a wild ride of technological perspective.

It turns out that your modern USB-C charger might just have more processing power than the guidance computer that took Neil Armstrong and his crew to the lunar surface in 1969.

Yes… a CHARGER. Mind blowing, right?

Apple developer Forrest Heller crunched the numbers and found that the Anker PowerPort Atom PD 2 USB-C charger he used for comparison runs at a clock speed of 48 MHz, while the Apollo 11 computer operated at a humble 1.024 MHz. That’s like comparing a race car to a tricycle!

In terms of memory, our trusty charger boasts 8KB of RAM and 128KB of flash memory, compared to the Apollo 11 computer’s 4KB of RAM and 72KB of storage. All in all, Heller estimates that the charger is a whopping 563 times faster, can store nearly twice as many instructions, and has over double the amount of RAM.

But before you start planning your backyard moon mission powered by phone chargers, hold your horses. Heller points out that you’d need four such chargers to replace the four separate computers on board Apollo 11. Plus, there might be a few other teeny tiny factors preventing a USB-C charger from piloting a spaceship.

This fun comparison not only showcases the incredible strides technology has made over the past half-century but also reminds us of the amazing feats achievable with seemingly modest hardware. So next time you plug in your phone, give a little nod to your charger – the unsung hero with the power of a lunar landing tucked inside its compact frame.

Got any old mobiles shoved away in a dusty drawer at home? You might be sitting on a fortune and not even know it!

Got any old mobiles shoved away in a dusty drawer at home? You might be sitting on a fortune and not even know it!

Let’s talk about the iPhone 1. I’m talking about the original, the OG, the one that started it all back in 2007. Specifically, I’m talking about the 4GB model.

You see, when the iPhone first made its grand entrance into the world on the 29th of June 2007, it was available in two variants – 4GB and 8GB. Most folks back then were all about ‘go big or go home,’ so they opted for the 8GB model.

The 4GB model, bless its heart, didn’t quite catch on. It was like the forgotten sibling at the family reunion. So much so, that Apple, then under the leadership of Steve Jobs, decided to pull it from the shelves just a couple of months after its release. Talk about a short-lived career!

But here’s the twist… that makes the 4GB model something of a collector’s item. It’s like finding a rare comic book or a limited-edition football card. And guess what? There’s one that’s still sealed, never been opened, up for auction right now!

This little piece of tech history originally sold for £457, but could now fetch up to 200 times its original price! The auction house estimates it could go for as high as $100,000 (£78,638). That’s a whole lot of dough for a phone that doesn’t even have a selfie camera.

Previous auctions for the 8GB model have seen prices soar to more than $60,000 (£47,180). But this 4GB rarity? It’s one of only four being showcased by LCG Auctions right now.

So next time you look at that old phone gathering dust in your drawer, remember, it might just be a treasure waiting to be discovered. Who knew being a tech hoarder could pay off this big?

Here’s a simple question that’s guaranteed to get people talking… which is your favourite browser: Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome? And which do you think is best for business?

Here’s a simple question that’s guaranteed to get people talking… which is your favourite browser: Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome? And which do you think is best for business?

I’m diving deep into the browser battle today. First off, let’s give a round of applause for Google Chrome, the browser that’s been with us through thick and thin since its launch 15 years ago. Chrome has been a reliable workhorse, but it’s been feeling the heat from Microsoft’s revamped Edge browser lately.

Edge has been turning heads with its impressive features, especially for power users and productivity fans. Remember when taking screenshots of web pages was a hassle? Well, Edge has web capture built right in. Chrome, on the other hand, needs extensions for this. Sure, extensions are great, but there’s nothing like having a feature baked in for a seamless experience.

Let’s talk tabs. As a self-confessed tab hoarder, I often have hundreds of tabs open at any given time. Chrome caps out at 110 tabs, beyond which additional tabs are hidden. But Edge pulls out a secret weapon – vertical tabs! This feature neatly squeezes all your tabs into a pane on the left, breaking through the 110-tab limit like a boss.

Finally, Edge’s Immersive Reading mode is a godsend if you crave a distraction-free reading environment. Hit F9, and you’re left with just the essential text on a soothing background, complete with grammar tools and a text-to-speech function.

Sure, Chrome might be able to mimic these features with extensions, but Edge offers them natively and is constantly improving them.

Back to my question then… which browser is your favourite?

Microsoft Edge’s new automatic image enhancement service has everyone buzzing.

Microsoft Edge’s new automatic image enhancement service has everyone buzzing. It’s like having your own personal photo editor sprucing up images while you browse.

Sounds fancy, doesn’t it? But before we get carried away with the glitz and glamour, let’s take a step back and look at what’s behind the curtain.

To provide this service, Edge sends the links of images you’re browsing to Microsoft. Now, you might be thinking, ‘So what? It’s just pictures of cats and memes, right?’ But hold onto your keyboard, because it gets a little more complicated.

Imagine you’re browsing through a confidential business document with images or viewing private photos shared with you via a link. Suddenly, these aren’t just harmless cat pictures being sent to Microsoft – it’s potentially sensitive information. It’s like sending postcards of your holiday to a stranger. They might not know where you live, but they sure know you love the beach!

So, how do you navigate this potential privacy minefield? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Here’s a quick step-by-step guide to turn off this feature:

– Open Microsoft Edge.
– Click on the 3-dot menu in the top right corner.
– Select ‘Settings’.
– Go to ‘Privacy, search, and services’.
– Scroll down to ‘Services’ and turn off the ‘Enhance images on the web’ option.

And voila! You’re back to browsing in peace, without sharing your love for cat memes with Microsoft.

Remember, as exciting as new features can be, it’s always important to consider the impact on your privacy. After all, your business is your business, not Microsoft’s.

OK Apple fans, got some great news for you.

OK Apple fans, got some great news for you.

The iOS 17 update is just around the corner, and it’s got a fresh batch of AirDrop features that are about to take productivity (and fun) to the next level.

First there’s a new pairing system. Sometimes you have to fumble around trying to connect with the right device. Fumble no more. With iOS 17, AirDrop is introducing a smoother, more intuitive pairing process.

Your AirDrop identity will no longer be just a name and a device. To make it more fun you’ll have a personalised contact poster on AirDrop. That means you can introduce a dash of personality.

Best of all, there’s an exciting gesture action for initiating sharing. No more digging around menus to share files. A simple gesture and voila! Your file is on its way. Efficiency and style, all rolled into one.

Now, let’s get serious for a moment. We all know how important it is to ensure our communications are safe and secure, especially when it comes to business data. That’s why Apple has upped its game in combating graphic or sensitive content. You can share and receive files with peace of mind, knowing that Apple is keeping an eye out for you.

Even so, it’s a good idea to use a business-specific file sharing program and save AirDrop for sharing personal stuff. If you need a hand finding the right file sharing program, get in touch.

What if your audience speaks a different language? YouTube has thought of that already, and will soon be introducing a new dubbing feature.

You know how important it is to reach as wide an audience as possible with your marketing. But what if your audience speaks a different language? YouTube has thought of that already, and will soon be introducing a new dubbing feature.

Using AI technology, YouTube will be able to automatically translate videos into different languages. This means that creators can reach audiences who speak different languages without having to create separate videos for each one.

And it also means that it will be easier to watch content from creators who speak a different language.

The feature uses machine learning to create a voiceover that matches the original video’s tone and cadence. It’s not perfect yet, but it’s a huge step forward for accessibility and inclusivity in the world of online content.

This technology has the potential to break down language barriers and connect people from all over the world. It also opens up new opportunities for businesses to expand their reach and explore new markets.

Of course, there’s still work to be done to improve the accuracy and quality of AI-generated translations. But the fact that this feature even exists is a testament to the power of innovation and technology. It’s another example of how we can use technology to make the world a more connected and inclusive place.

Would you use this for your business?

Back in 2000, J. Lo wore a now-iconic green Versace dress to the Grammy Awards. What’s that got to do with tech, I hear you shout?

Well, the dress was so popular that people couldn’t stop searching for it online, but there was no easy way to find images of it. That’s when Google co-founder Sergey Brin had the brilliant idea to create a search engine specifically for images.

And just like that, Google Images was born.

Today, it’s an integral part of the internet that we can’t imagine living without. It’s helped us find everything from cute animal pictures to business-related graphics.

But it all started with J. Lo’s green dress. Who would have thought that a fashion statement could be the inspiration for such a game-changing technology? It just goes to show that inspiration can come from the most unexpected places.

Did your business inspiration come from an unusual place? I’d love to hear your stories?

A computer without a keyboard seems pointless today, right?

A computer without a keyboard seems pointless today, right? But believe it or not, this week back in 1956 was the first time a keyboard replaced dials, switches and punch cards.

The Whirlwind was a revolutionary computer developed at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). It was the first computer to use magnetic core memory, which paved the way for modern computer memory technology.

But that’s not all – the Whirlwind was also the first computer that allowed people to enter commands via a keyboard. Before the Whirlwind, computers were programmed using punch cards, which were slow and labour-intensive. With the Whirlwind, people could type in commands just like they would on a typewriter.

This might seem like a small thing, but it was a huge step forward for computing as we know it. The Whirlwind made it possible for people to interact with computers in a way that was intuitive and user-friendly. It also helped to pave the way for the development of modern programming languages like COBOL and FORTRAN.

Of course, typing in commands on the Whirlwind wasn’t as easy as it is today. The computer had no monitor, so users had to input commands blindly and wait for the results. But it was a huge improvement over punch cards, and it set the stage for the development of modern user interfaces.

So the next time you type something into your computer or device, take a moment to appreciate the pioneers who made it all possible. Using your iPhone wouldn’t be so quick with punch cards…

Teams is amazing, but you still need to be cautious with how you and your employees use it.

Collaboration tools like Microsoft Teams have become an integral part of our work lives. But you still need to be cautious with how you and your employees use it. That’s because security researchers have discovered a bug in Teams that could potentially allow malware to be delivered from external accounts.

This vulnerability allows cyber criminals to send a specially crafted message via Teams from an external account. If it’s clicked, the link in the message would deliver malware directly onto the victim’s computer or device.

Don’t worry though, Microsoft is working on a fix for this bug and will roll it out soon. And the risk is actually pretty low.

Plus, to prevent external messages being sent to your business, you can disable external communication in the admin centre.

In the meantime, you should always take appropriate steps to reduce your risk of falling victim to such attacks.

Firstly, make sure that your employees are aware of this vulnerability. Educate them on how to identify and report suspicious messages and links to IT support.

Secondly, ensure that your device’s security software is up-to-date with the latest patches and upgrades. This helps to prevent malware from infecting your device in the first place.

Finally, encourage your team to be cautious when clicking on links or downloading attachments from external sources. Remember, it only takes one click to put your business’s data at risk.

If you’d like help staying safe, get in touch.

It’s easy to forget that browsing the web has a risk, as cyber criminals are constantly targeting all businesses using automated tools. Good news – Microsoft is working on a major security update for its Edge browser, bringing enhanced security to everyone using it.

This means that you can browse with less worry about potential cyber threats. With new security features and beefed-up existing ones, Microsoft Edge is making sure that you stay one step ahead of the game.

For example, Edge has got you covered with a Password Monitor feature that alerts you if any of your saved passwords have been compromised in a data breach (so you can change them immediately).

Plus, Edge’s SmartScreen technology helps safeguard you from phishing scams and malware. It checks websites against a list of known malicious sites, as well as analysing URLs for any suspicious patterns or characteristics. If it detects something that’s not right, you’ll be warned before you visit the site.

Why should you care about all these security updates? Using a less secure browser could leave you vulnerable to all sorts of online threats. Cyber criminals are constantly coming up with new ways to exploit weaknesses, so it’s important to stay up-to-date with the latest security measures.

And let’s face it – no one wants to deal with the aftermath of a cyber attack. Whether it’s dealing with financial losses, identity theft, or just the hassle of cleaning up the mess, the consequences of a breach can be HUGE.

If my team and I can help you optimise your Microsoft 365 suite for your business, get in touch.

You’ve heard of Bing Chat, right?

You’ve heard of Bing Chat, right?

It’s Microsoft’s answer to ChatGPT. You can ask it questions, get it to write emails, stories, perhaps pages for your website… or even ask it to tell you Dad Jokes.

And now Bing Chat has made it easier for you to search for products and services (and much more) with its new image input feature.

Say you’re looking for a specific product but can’t quite remember the name or description. With Bing Chat’s new feature, all you need to do is snap a picture of it and send it to Bing Chat. The search engine will then give you a list of relevant results. Time saved. Everyone wins.

This new feature also means you can optimise your online presence. By adding high-quality images of your products or services to your website, you can increase the chances of being discovered by potential customers who use this image search feature.

It’s not limited to products either. You may find an image you can’t decipher, a landscape you’d like to locate, even a still from a movie you’d like to identify. The possibilities are almost endless.

Just think about the time it could save you or your team on certain tasks. Give it a go and let me know how accurate you think its results are.

You know that feeling when you’re finally done with work for the day, but you keep checking your email because you just can’t resist?

You know that feeling when you’re finally done with work for the day, but you keep checking your email because you just can’t resist? It’s like you’re tethered to your inbox 24/7.

Ugh.

Well, what if I told you that you could actually schedule your emails so that they don’t go out until later? That way, you can disconnect from work and enjoy your free time without feeling guilty or anxious about unread messages.

Outlook has a scheduling feature that lets you delay sending your email until a specific date and time. All you have to do is compose your message as usual, then click on the ‘Options’ tab and select ‘Delay Delivery.’ From there, you can choose when you want the email to be sent (e.g., tomorrow morning, next week, etc.) and even set up recurring schedules if needed.

How cool is that?

But this productivity hack isn’t just about your own work-life balance – it’s also about promoting a healthy culture for your team. By scheduling your emails, you’re sending a subtle message that it’s okay to take a break and recharge outside of work hours. Your staff will appreciate the gesture and feel less pressure to respond immediately, which can lead to better performance and morale in the long run.

So, do yourself and your team a favour and give this Outlook feature a try.

Are you guilty of working from your sofa or even your bed when you’re working from home?

Are you guilty of working from your sofa or even your bed when you’re working from home? I won’t judge – after all, sometimes the most comfortable spot is also the most productive.

But did you know that using a lap desk could make your work-from-home setup even better? A lap desk can give you all the comfort and convenience you need, improve your posture and prevent discomfort. It can also protect your devices.

Here are just a few benefits of using a lap desk:

1. Comfort: Using a lap desk can eliminate back, neck, and shoulder pain caused by hunching over a laptop on a sofa or bed. It can also prevent you from overheating your body by allowing air to circulate around your laptop.

2. Posture: A lap desk can help you maintain proper posture while working, which can prevent long-term damage to your spine and muscles.

3. Productivity: By eliminating discomfort, a lap desk can help you stay focused and productive for longer periods of time.

So why not invest in a lap desk and make your work-from-home experience even more comfortable and convenient? Just don’t blame me if you never want to leave your sofa again!

Do you ever use the term ‘jiffy’ when talking about how quickly something can be done?

Do you ever use the term ‘jiffy’ when talking about how quickly something can be done? As IT experts, we’re all about precision and accuracy – but where did this quirky little term come from?

Well, it turns out that ‘jiffy’ is actually a real unit of time used in the world of computing. Specifically, it refers to the amount of time it takes for one tick of the system timer interrupt on a computer. I can explain that further if you like, but it’s getting very technical!

Where did the term ‘jiffy’ originate? It actually dates back to the 18th century, where it was used to refer to a brief moment of time. And over the years, it’s been used in various industries to denote different lengths of time For example, in physics, a jiffy is defined as the time it takes light to travel one fermi… that’s a real term by the way, not something from Star Trek.

So next time you hear someone say they’ll get something done ‘in a jiffy’, you can impress them with your knowledge of its origins in computing.

And who knows, maybe you’ll even start using it yourself to measure how long it takes to complete annoying IT tasks… that you should be giving to my team anyway!

Can you believe it’s been 16 years since the iPhone first went on sale?

Can you believe it’s been 16 years since the iPhone first went on sale?

That’s right, on June 29th, 2007, people were camping out in front of Apple stores just to get their hands on this ground-breaking new device. One million phones were sold in just 74 days.

Now, it’s hard to imagine a world without smartphones – but back in 2007, the iPhone was a game changer. Not only did it combine features like a phone, camera, and music player into one sleek device, but it also introduced the concept of a touchscreen interface and paved the way for mobile apps.

Let’s be honest, we’ve all probably spent more time than we care to admit scrolling through Instagram or playing Candy Crush on our iPhones. But beyond the entertainment factor, the iPhone has had a huge impact on the world.

From changing the way we communicate with each other to revolutionising industries like music, photography, and even healthcare, the iPhone has left an indelible mark on our society.

So as we celebrate the 16th anniversary of this iconic device, let’s take a moment to appreciate just how far we’ve come – and also poke a little fun at those early iPhones with their tiny screens and limited features (remember when taking a selfie wasn’t even an option?).

Here’s to another 16 years of innovation, progress, and of course, memes.
Happy anniversary, iPhone!

Have you hopped on the hybrid working bandwagon yet?

Have you hopped on the hybrid working bandwagon yet?

While lots of people love the flexibility of switching between working from home and the office, it turns out that not everyone is a fan.

According to a recent study, Gen Z workers enjoy hybrid working the least. That’s right, the generation that grew up with smartphones in their hands and tablets in their cribs aren’t as excited about this new way of working as you might think.

Now, I’m not here to pick sides or debate the merits of hybrid working – after all, everyone has their own preferences and needs. But what I do want to emphasise is that one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to managing your team.

Some workers thrive in an office environment, while others prefer the peace and quiet of working from home. Some love the social aspect of collaborating in person. Others are perfectly content communicating via Teams or email.

So, if you’re planning on implementing a hybrid working model (or any other type of work arrangement for that matter), make sure you take into account the varied preferences and needs of your team. Talk to them, see what they like and dislike, and come up with a plan that works for everyone. And don’t forget that your tech – and security – needs will be different if you have some people working from home.

At the end of the day we all just want to be happy and productive, whether that means working in an office, from home, or on the moon. If my team and I can help you with that, get in touch.

Microsoft Teams has just launched a new feature – Meeting Recap – that might be the solution to all your problems.

Ever found yourself in a meeting, desperately trying to scribble down notes while also trying to pay attention to what’s being said?

Well, Microsoft Teams has just launched a new feature – Meeting Recap – that might be the solution to all your problems.

This latest Teams feature uses AI-based intelligence to create meeting recaps and actions, so everyone can focus on the meeting without being distracted by taking notes. This is especially useful for anyone who can’t make a meeting but still wants to stay updated on what was discussed.

Imagine never having to worry about missing important details from a meeting again! With Teams’ new AI-based intelligence, you can trust that everything will be captured and saved for future reference.

And let’s be real, taking notes during meetings can be a real pain. Not only is it distracting, but it can also be tough to keep up with everything that’s being said. With Teams doing the heavy lifting for you, you can sit back, relax, and actually participate in the meeting (what a concept).

If you want to give Teams’ new update a try, you’ll need to be a Premium subscriber. In my opinion it’s totally worth the upgrade. It might just be the game-changer you’ve been looking for to streamline your meetings and boost productivity.

Plus, it’ll give you more time to focus on what really matters… or time to take a much needed break.

Have you heard of a DDoS attack? If not, listen up.

Have you heard of a DDoS attack? If not, listen up. Recently, Microsoft’s Outlook was taken down by one, causing chaos for millions of people.

What exactly is a DDoS attack? It stands for Distributed Denial of Service, and it’s a type of cyber attack that floods a server with traffic until it can no longer function properly. Think of it like a digital traffic jam – the more cars on the road, the slower things move.

DDoS attacks can happen to anyone, regardless of size or industry. And if your business relies on online services like email or cloud storage (which, let’s be real, most businesses do these days), an attack like this can be incredibly disruptive.

So how can you protect your business from a DDoS attack? Here’s my advice:

1. Invest in DDoS protection
2. Keep your software up-to-date – many DDoS attacks rely on exploiting vulnerabilities in outdated software
3. Use a content delivery network (CDN). It can help distribute incoming traffic across multiple servers, reducing the load on any one server and making it harder for attackers to overwhelm your system
4. Monitor your traffic. It’ll help you quickly identify any unusual spikes or patterns that might indicate a DDoS attack in progress

By taking these steps, you can help protect your business from falling victim to a DDoS attack. My team and I can help implement these. And if the worst does happen, don’t panic… we can also help mitigate the damage and get you back up and running as soon as possible.

Remember, cyber criminals are always finding new ways to disrupt our digital lives. But with a little bit of vigilance and preparation, you can keep your business safe and secure.

Let’s talk about something we all care about: productivity.

Let’s talk about something we all care about: productivity.

As business owners, leaders, and professionals, we’re constantly striving to do more in less time. We spend a lot of time recommending different software and applications that can give your whole team a productivity boost. But sometimes we need to think about things in a simpler way.

What if we told you that something as basic as the colour of your office could impact your productivity?

It might sound crazy, but hear us out. According to research, certain colours can have a positive or negative effect on how productive we are at work. For example, blue and green are calming colours that can increase focus and efficiency, while red and yellow are stimulating colours that can lead to distraction and stress.

So, if you’re finding yourself struggling to stay on task or feeling overwhelmed at work, it might be worth taking a closer look at your office’s colour scheme. Here are some ideas to get you started:

1. Think blue and green. These colours are associated with nature and tranquility, making them perfect for creating a calm and focused workspace. Consider adding some plants or artwork featuring these colours to your office.

2. Avoid red and yellow. While these colours can be energizing, they can also be distracting and create a sense of urgency that can lead to stress. Instead, opt for softer shades like peach or light pink if you want a pop of colour.

3. Don’t be afraid to mix it up. Maybe you find blue and green too boring, or you need a little more energy in your workspace. That’s okay! You can still incorporate elements of these calming colours while adding accents of other colours to keep things interesting.

At the end of the day, the colour of your office shouldn’t be the only factor impacting your productivity. But it’s worth considering if you’re looking for ways to improve your focus, efficiency, and overall well-being at work. Plus, who doesn’t love an excuse to redecorate?

And hey, if all else fails, remember, we still have all those software recommendations!

Maybe it’s time you tried a mesh Wi-Fi system.

We’ve all been there – trying to get some important work done from home (maybe on a Saturday) but your Wi-Fi connection is weak and slow. It’s like trying to run through quicksand.

Maybe it’s time you tried a mesh Wi-Fi system.

This is like the superhero of the Wi-Fi world, using multiple boxes working together to make sure your home is covered with a strong signal exactly where you need it. Even if you’ve got thick walls or multiple floors, it’s no problem.

But with so many options out there, where do you start? Some of the best mesh WiFi systems include the Google Nest WiFi, Amazon Eero Pro 6, and Netgear Orbi. They’re fast, easy to set up, and customisable. But of course, if you’re using it for work, it’s a good idea to speak to an expert to see which solution is most suitable for your business’s needs.

Investing in a good mesh Wi-Fi system for your remote team is a win-win, too. Not only will it make their lives easier and more productive, but it’ll also keep them happy and connected. And let’s be honest, nobody wants to hear ‘Can you hear me now?’ on every Teams call.

Imagine the day we look back on buffering videos and dropped calls with fondness, like we do for our old flip phones. But until then, let’s embrace the power of a good Wi-Fi connection and all the streaming, scrolling, and video conferencing it allows us to do.

Have you ever noticed that some of the biggest tech companies in the world got their start in a garage?

Have you ever noticed that some of the biggest tech companies in the world got their start in a garage? That’s right, Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon all began in humble garages, on a shoestring budget (let’s forget the wealthy families behind them for a moment).

It’s left us wondering… what is it about garages or spare rooms… these unassuming spaces that sparks creativity?

Maybe it’s the lack of distractions – no fancy office furniture or corporate politics to deal with. Or perhaps it’s the freedom to be messy and experimental without worrying about ruining expensive equipment. Whatever the reason, there’s something about the ‘spare space’ that seems to inspire innovation and creativity.

So, for all wannabe business owners who are starting out on a tight budget, take heart – you’re in good company. Maybe one day we’ll look back on your garage or spare room with the same reverence as we do with the places where the big firms got their start!

But, wherever your business begins, and whatever point its at now, let’s not forget that it takes more than just a garage to build a successful business. It takes hard work, dedication, and a willingness to take risks.

We’d love to hear about where your business started out. Leave us a comment below. And if we can help you pick the right tech to take your next big business step, get in touch.

Happy anniversary to the QWERTY typewriter.

Happy anniversary to the QWERTY typewriter. 155 years ago this week (June 1868) this innovative invention was patented. You take it as standard today, but do you know why it was originally created?

It was designed to reduce jams in mechanical typewriters by separating popular letters. Back then, the print bar of letters next to each other could get stuck. QWERTY allowed typists to type faster with fewer annoying jams.

Now it’s the standard keyboard in tech across the globe. It’s sometimes funny to look at something we use every day and realise it was invented to solve a problem that no longer exists.

At this point, the concept of a chatbot isn’t exactly news anymore. How quickly times have changed!

But did you know that the Bing search engine also has its very own AI-powered chatbot?

Bing Chat can do everything from answer your questions to play games and tell jokes. It’s like having a personal assistant right at your fingertips.

The chatbot uses natural language processing and machine learning to understand your queries and respond with helpful information or witty banter. You can ask it anything from ‘What’s the weather like?’ to ‘Who won the FA Cup in 1986?’ and get a quick, accurate response.

But that’s not all. Now, the desktop version of Bing Chat is catching up with the mobile version to support voice control. That means you can ask your questions hands-free while doing other things on your computer. Talk about multitasking!

It’s simple to use. Just click on the microphone icon next to the chat box and start talking. Bing Chat will take care of the rest.

Of course, we should mention that voice control isn’t for everyone. If you feel uncomfortable speaking out loud, or if you’re in a noisy environment, it might not be the best option for you. But it’s still worth checking out.

We need to talk about something serious – the rise of Business Email Compromise (BEC) attacks.

We need to talk about something serious – the rise of Business Email Compromise (BEC) attacks. They’re becoming more sophisticated and frequent, and can have devastating consequences for your company’s finances, reputation, and security.

What exactly is a BEC attack?

It’s when a cyber criminal gains access to a legitimate company email account and uses it to send fraudulent messages to other employees, customers, or partners.

These messages can be very convincing, often using social engineering tactics to trick people into giving away sensitive information or transferring money.

The scary thing about BEC attacks is that they can be hard to spot. The fake emails might look like they’re coming from someone you trust, or they might contain details that make them seem legitimate. That’s why it’s important to be vigilant and know the warning signs.

Here are some red flags to watch out for:

1. Urgent requests for money or financial information. If someone is pressuring you to make a payment or provide sensitive data ASAP, be skeptical.

2. Changes to payment instructions or wire transfer details. Cyber criminals might intercept legitimate emails and modify the payment instructions, so double-check before sending any funds.

3. Emails from unusual addresses or with strange formatting. Sometimes cyber criminals will use domain names or email addresses that are similar to legitimate ones but with subtle differences.

4. Requests for confidential information that normally wouldn’t be shared over email. Remember, sensitive data should always be encrypted and exchanged through secure channels.

If you suspect that you’ve been targeted by a BEC attack, don’t panic – but do take urgent action. Contact your IT support partner immediately, and consider additional safeguards like multi-factor authentication or employee training programmes.

Remember, cyber security is everyone’s responsibility. Stay vigilant, stay informed, and stay safe! If we can help you do that, get in touch.

What if you could quickly take and organise notes without even opening an app?

As business owners, we’re always on the go but still need to stay organised. What if you could quickly take and organise notes without even opening an app?

Well, with the iPhone’s hidden Quick Notes feature, you can. This feature allows you to capture notes without unlocking your phone or opening the Notes app.

To set it up, go to the Control Centre in Settings, find Quick Notes, and add it to Included Controls. Now, when you swipe down from your Lock Screen, the Quick Notes icon will appear and you can write, dictate, scribble, or even take a photo.

The best part? These quick notes are automatically saved to your Notes app, so you can easily access and organise them later. It’s a great way to quickly capture ideas, reminders, or to-do lists without interrupting your workflow. #NoteTaking #HowTo #ProductivityTips

According to recent research, one of the biggest factors affecting our productivity is our use of technology.

As business owners, we often feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done. But what if we could reclaim some of that lost time and be more productive?

According to recent research, one of the biggest factors affecting our productivity is our use of technology.

Smartphones, apps, the internet… all great, but also major distractions that drain our time and kill our productivity. Constantly checking emails or scrolling through social media can take us away from important tasks and reduce our focus.

If you want to improve your productivity, it’s important to identify these time drains and limit their impact. This might include turning off notifications for non-essential apps, setting specific times to check emails, or using website blockers to limit your time on distracting websites.

Another helpful strategy is to set boundaries with your technology use. For example, try setting specific times of the day where you don’t use your phone. Or even log out of your email account when you’re not working to avoid the temptation of checking it.

That’s a horrifying thought!

By reducing the impact of technology on your productivity, you can create more focused and efficient work habits. Which should give your business huge benefits.

Take a step back, assess your technology use, and find ways to make technology work for you (rather than against you). If we can help, get in touch. #productivity #TimeManagement #TechDistractions

As businesses, we need to stay aware of the latest developments in green technology and minimise our environmental footprint.

Technology is evolving at an unprecedented pace, but so is our understanding of the impact it has on our planet. As businesses, we need to stay aware of the latest developments in green technology and minimise our environmental footprint.

There’s a great example in Japan, where researchers are planning to launch a wooden satellite into orbit next year.

It sounds unusual, but there are good reasons for using wood instead of traditional materials like metal or plastic. For one, wooden satellites would burn up more easily upon re-entry, reducing the amount of debris that falls to the Earth. And the production of wooden materials is less energy-intensive than metals and plastics, making it a greener alternative.

This development shows us that even in areas as high-tech as space exploration, there’s room for environmentally-friendly innovation.

How could you make your business’s tech greener? #GreenTech #sustainability #EnvironmentallyFriendly

Did you know that millions of deleted files can still be recovered from hard drives purchased online?

Did you know that millions of deleted files can still be recovered from hard drives purchased online?

According to recent research, many used hard drives sold on popular online marketplaces still contain sensitive information, such as financial records, passwords, and personal data. This is a major security risk for businesses, as it means that even if you think you’ve wiped your old hard drive clean, someone else could potentially access your confidential information.

To protect your business from these risks, it’s important to take extra precautions when disposing of old hard drives. One way to do this is to physically destroy the hard drive using a professional shredding service.

Another option is to use specialised software to overwrite the hard drive with random data multiple times, making it much more difficult to recover any deleted files.

As a business owner, it’s your responsibility to ensure that sensitive data is properly disposed of and not left vulnerable to cyber criminals. So, before you sell or donate old hard drives, make sure you take the right steps to protect your business. #CyberSecurity #DataSecurity #HardDriveDisposal

Are you still using “123456” or “password” as your password?

Are you still using “123456” or “password” as your password? You’re not alone – these two are among the top 10 most commonly used passwords in the world, according to a recent study. But using such weak passwords could make it easier for cyber criminals to gain access to your sensitive data.

To protect your online accounts from being hijacked, use unique and complex passwords for each account you use. This means avoiding common words, phrases, and patterns that can be easily guessed, such as “qwerty,” “admin,” or “letmein.”

It’s also important to change your passwords regularly, especially for high-risk accounts like your email or online banking. Where possible, set up two-factor authentication, which requires a second form of verification (such as a code sent to your phone) to log in.

The easiest way to make sure your passwords are unique, strong, and safe is to use a password manager. We can help you find the most suitable one for your business – get in touch. #CyberSecurity #PasswordProtection #InternetSecurity
