Microsoft has declared war against annoying website notification pop-ups with its latest tool. You know the ones I’m talking about – those sneaky little messages that trick you into clicking ‘allow’ by pretending to check if you’re a robot. And once you do, you get a barrage of annoying notifications from the website every time somebody sneezes (or that’s what it feels like).
These underhanded tactics can also lead to a barrage of misleading notifications, like false virus alerts and deceptive antivirus software sales. Isn’t that just the worst? Now Microsoft’s Edge has a new tool that will protect us from these spam notifications.
Microsoft has said, and I quote: ‘Website notifications are great for staying up to date on your favourite web apps, but they can also be used to spam you with messages that can be unwanted or even misleading.’
Edge is kicking these spammy notifications to the curb. Microsoft has identified dozens of different types of spam notifications and has taken away the privileges from the websites that send them.
A round of applause, please!
This may not seem like a big deal to the tech-savvy among us, but let’s not forget not everyone is so clued-up on the digital world. These notifications can be downright intimidating… not to mention annoying for everyone.
Microsoft has combined this initiative with another plan to combat those misleading notifications. They’ve found that most of these nuisances come from unfamiliar websites. So, they’ve decided to deliver the first notification from these sites in a ‘quiet’ fashion. No more full-on pop-ups, just a subtle message in the address bar.
And guess what? It’s working! There’s been a ‘significant decrease in customers reporting issues with notifications.’
Do these kinds of notifications drive you mad? And if you use Edge, have you noticed an improvement?
