Job interviews can be nerve-wracking…
You’ve got your suit pressed, your CV polished, and you’ve rehearsed answers to every possible question… or so you thought.
Just when you think you’re prepared for anything, the interviewer throws you a curveball: ‘Why are manhole covers round?’
Wait, what? Is this a job interview or a pub quiz?
Believe it or not, this isn’t a joke.
This quirky question is reportedly one of Microsoft’s favourite ways to test prospective employees’ ability to think outside the box. And you thought they’d just ask about Excel skills!
So why ARE manhole covers round?
The practical answer is that a round cover can’t fall through a round hole because it’s the same width all around. It also doesn’t need to be rotated or precisely aligned when placing it back on.
But Microsoft isn’t really interested in a candidate’s knowledge of urban infrastructure. They want to see how they approach a problem that seems unrelated to the job. Can they think creatively? How do they handle unexpected challenges?
So next time you’re prepping for a job interview, remember: it’s not just about the candidate having the right answers. It’s about them showing their thought process, creativity, and their ability to handle the unexpected.
Now, here’s a challenge for you: If you were conducting a job interview, what weird or unusual question would you ask? Drop your answers in the comments. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
