Isn’t it astonishing what lengths some people will go to for a quick quid? Recently, a man in China was caught after he’d taped not one, not two, but 68 iPhones to his body in an attempt to smuggle them into the country.
Yes, you read that right: sixty-eight!
An entire orchestra of smartphones, all strapped to one man’s abdomen and lower legs.
If you think that sounds rather uncomfortable, you’d be right. Customs officials at China’s Qingmao port thought something was wrong when they noticed a man walking with what they described as an ‘abnormal posture.’
And this wasn’t the first time they’ve seen such a sight. Less than a month earlier, another individual had been spotted at the same port with a similarly peculiar stance. Turns out, he had 306 processors strapped to his body. Can you imagine? It’s like an extreme sport.
But back to our iPhone enthusiast. This 68-year-old man must have thought he could outdo his predecessors by opting for smartphones over processors. The weight of those iPhones alone would give me an awkward gait.
All this effort is to avoid paying import taxes. The potential profit from selling these smuggled goods can be quite significant. From SSDs strapped to bodies to processors hidden in a fake pregnant belly, and even electronics stashed inside an electric scooter, smuggling tech into China is a creative art.
