Happy anniversary to the QWERTY typewriter. 155 years ago this week (June 1868) this innovative invention was patented. You take it as standard today, but do you know why it was originally created?
It was designed to reduce jams in mechanical typewriters by separating popular letters. Back then, the print bar of letters next to each other could get stuck. QWERTY allowed typists to type faster with fewer annoying jams.
Now it’s the standard keyboard in tech across the globe. It’s sometimes funny to look at something we use every day and realise it was invented to solve a problem that no longer exists.
