41 years ago today, the first ever CD was made. It was co-developed by Phillips and Sony, designed to be the successor to the vinyl record. And what a successor it turned out to be.
That was just a test pressing back in 1982… seven months later the first CDs designed to be sold were manufactured (‘The Visitors’ album by ABBA).
Today CDs might seem like ancient relics. But let’s not forget the impact they had on the music industry. They made music more accessible and portable than ever before.
The humble CD may have been replaced by MP3s (which were replaced by streaming). But it will always hold a special place in our hearts (and our music collections).
What was the first CD you ever bought?
